Hold yer horses, Raleigh — or at least, slow down a little bit. The city has been ramping up their speed limit reductions on dozens of streets across the capital this year.
So far, Raleigh has successfully reduced the speed limits on 65 streets measuring approx. 22.75 miles — compared to 34 streets total in 2020.
According to the city, there’s a direct relationship between vehicle speed + safety, especially for cyclists and pedestrians. Therefore, Raleigh is aiming to minimize risk and the severity of crashes by reducing the speed limits on city streets.
Approved reductions
At a meeting on Tues., Aug. 17, the city council approved 7 new reductions — including Ed Drive, from Edwards Mill Road to Blue Ridge Road. The changes will go into effect on Tues., Aug. 24.
Completed reductions
There are currently 32 reductions that have completed the resident ballot process and are awaiting approval from the city council. One such reduction — slated for Quail Ridge Road, from Spring Forest Road to Falls of Neuse Road — is scheduled for the Tues., Sept. 7 meeting + would go into effect 7 days after approval.
Processing reductions
Residents who live along the 14 streets currently up for reduction are able to cast a ballot — either “yes” or “no” — during a 2-week period. The city sent unique authorization codes out to these residents, which are required to cast a ballot.
